The Flowers & Linen
The right mix of style and simplicity will be the cornerstone of fabulous wedding floral arrangements in 2016.
Thank you Bridal Guide for keeping us all on trend!
Arrangements that feature both whatever is in season and whatever is local are gaining traction. Sometimes couples request a “wild” look, say Casey Schwartz and Kit Wertz of Flower Duet in Los Angeles. “What they’re after are freshly picked blooms.” These free-form bouquets and centerpieces often include a mix of big and small blossoms in more than one color, and might use spiky flowers or fruiting vines to serve as exclamation points.
A concentrated cluster of one color lends a graphic impact to centerpieces. Ask your florist to choose three to five different flowers in the same shade — the slight color variations create an ombré effect. For an uber-romantic feel, stick to the opposite ends of the color spectrum — either pale or deeply saturated. To set the table for fun, pick a hyper-vivid neon or a playful sorbet shade.
Flowers not always necessary
Potted trees, succulents, ferns, lavender sprigs and decorative leaves (such as magnolia, begonia) are no longer reserved for anchoring flower arrangements — these days they can become the focal point of the décor. Flowering plants and blooming branches (think flowering quince, crab apple or cherry blossom) also work well as creative centerpieces. And a budget-friendly elegant idea is to adorn bare branches with crepe-paper flowers or sparkly jewels.
Try this trend
Mix up your centerpieces. “All tables need not look the same,” say Amber Karson and Emily Butler of Karson Butler Events in Washington, D.C. and California.

Now that you’ve decided on where, when, how many guests and who will be capturing the most special day of your life with photos, it is on to the next very important vendor.
With this there is some flexibility, dependent on how far in advance that you begin planning and what is included within your venue. For example, if you are going with a “bare bones” rustic barn or old warehouse in the city, they probably will not include catering, tables or chairs. This should be the next step as catering and the setup staff will be a HUGE portion of the budget. And let’s not forget that people in the South love great food! On the other hand, if you are opting for a museum or an upscale hotel venue such as Hotel Sorella, the catering, staffing, setup, tables and chairs will most likely be included. The next important vendor in line here would be the DJ or Band. Of course, people in the South love entertainment too.
Advice from Elle: “Ask prospective caterers for a tasting, even if there is a small fee. Also, ask your DJ if they have any videos or recordings from previous wedding that they have played at!”
Hotel Sorella offers creative catering menus featuring delicious Southern food stations. Contact Elle Hutchinson for rates and availability at 713.827.3508 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Once you have determined your “when, where and how much” the fun really begins! While I would personally like to dive right into gorgeous blush hydrangea bouquets and tasting of lemon curd cakes with buttercream icing, first things first. For me, this was the Photographer. Remember, after the Wedding day is over you will have your wonderful memories and pictures of the day. This is one vendor that I recommend selecting as soon as possible, as some companies can book as far as two years in advance.
Advice from Elle – “Photography can be one of the priciest parts of the Big Day! While it’s easy to think that you will be able cut cost on another vendor later down the road, this may not happen. Don’t book an overly expensive photographer that doesn’t fit within your budget. There are GREAT photographers at many price points.”

After the initial excitement of becoming newly engaged subsided, I needed to make a few important decisions, and rather quickly. First, when are we hoping to get married? As many venues book 10-18 months in advance. Second, how many guests are we planning to invite? As this will affect the size of your venue. Third, what’s our wedding budget (dun dun dun)… This can be an uncomfortable conversation, but it is absolutely necessary.
So I’m not going to sugar coat it. Those first three steps were very stressful on me, and I’m a professional. If you become stressed, it’s natural. Reach out to a wedding planner or the coordinator at the venue you are interested in. Just know, after you and your fiancé (perhaps with your families as well) come to an agreement on the above you will get to enjoy the FUN and begin planning the BEST day ever!
Advice from Elle: “Be sure to discuss the above questions with all parties involved in the Wedding planning. It would be so unfortunate to reserve a venue, on your favorite date that will not accommodate all of the guests you and your families hope to invite.”
